Richard G. Dearden is a senior litigation partner at Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office and a distinguished legal expert in Canada. As a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Rick brings decades of expertise, being called to the Bar in Ontario in 1979. He is renowned for his practice in defamation and media law, administrative law, freedom of information, and international trade law. Rick represents clients before all levels of courts in Ontario, as well as the Federal Courts, Supreme Court of Canada, and the Canadian International Trade Tribunal.
Rick has served as counsel in landmark defamation trials, appeals, and press freedom cases under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He notably represented the Ottawa Citizen at the Supreme Court of Canada in Cusson v. Quan and Grant v. Torstar, cases which established the “public interest responsible communication” defence to libel actions in Canada.
