Roberto Tomassini is a partner in Koskie Minsky’s Pension and Employee Benefits Department and serves as the head of the Tax Group. With a distinguished career that began after his call to the Ontario Bar in 1995, Roberto brings specialized expertise in taxation and compliance for pensions, employee benefit plans, and non-profit organizations.

With decades of experience, Roberto is recognized for his comprehensive knowledge of health and welfare trusts and employee life and health trusts (ELHTs). He was a key member of the Koskie Minsky team that negotiated and established Canada’s first ELHT, contributing significantly to the drafting of key amendments to the Income Tax Act and relevant Ontario legislation regarding retail sales tax (RST) and premium tax.

Roberto is a trusted advisor to sponsors and trustees, guiding them through complex issues in pension plans, taxation, and benefit compliance. He has been an active volunteer, regularly preparing submissions and lobbying efforts for the Multi-Employer Benefits Council of Canada (MEBCO), notably on ELHT transition rules. His expertise is further reflected in his extensive writings and his role as an editor for the Fourth Edition of Employee Benefits in Canada, published by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Roberto holds a law degree from the University of Toronto and is frequently sought after for guidance on high-stakes pension and benefits matters across Ontario and Canada.
