William C. McDowell is a distinguished trial lawyer and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers with a call to the Ontario Bar in 1988. As a partner at Lenczner Slaght, Will is known for his extensive experience in commercial litigation, libel, and public law cases. His legal career features representation in numerous landmark cases, including those before the Supreme Court of Canada.
Will’s practice covers a broad spectrum of high-profile cases, such as acting for the Chief of Police of Toronto, the Chief Adjudicator of the Independent Assessment Process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and serving as amicus to the Superior Court for Aboriginal land occupation matters in Brantford. He also served as Chief Commission Counsel to the Long-Term Care Homes Inquiry and played a pivotal role in resolving the historic Maher Arar v. Canada case, for which he received a Department of Justice National Award.
From 2005 to 2008, Will distinguished himself as Canada’s Associate Deputy Minister of Justice, where he oversaw civil litigation, national security, and strategic national issues. He continues to demonstrate leadership and commitment to the legal profession, currently serving his third term as a Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario as of May 2023.
