Brian Kingwell is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office, practicing in the firm’s global Intellectual Property and Life Sciences Groups. His practice focuses on patent prosecution and strategic patent portfolio counseling in the fields of pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical and reservoir engineering, medicine, and medical devices (he himself is the inventor of a patented medical device). Brian’s clients span a range of sectors and industries, including healthcare, biotechnology, agriculture, and cleantech.

In addition to public speaking engagements on the patent process, he has lectured on patent law at the law schools of the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. Brian is a Registered Patent and Trademark Agent in both the US and Canada and was called to both the British Columbia Bar and Ontario Bar in 1993. He also holds a BSc in Biochemistry and an MSc in Molecular Cell Biology.

Brian has been recognized in Managing Intellectual Property: IP Stars, IAM Patent 1000, WIPR Leaders, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, and The Best Lawyers in Canada among other publications. In 2018, 2021, and 2024 he received the Best Lawyers Biotechnology Law “Lawyer of the Year” award in Vancouver.
