Dennis R. O’Connor, KC, serves as senior counsel in the Toronto office of BLG, bringing unparalleled expertise and experience to the firm. As a distinguished member of Arbitration Place, Toronto, Mr. O’Connor offers a wealth of knowledge gained from his tenure on the Court of Appeal for Ontario, where he served from 1998 to 2012, including as Associate Chief Justice of Ontario from 2001 until his retirement in 2012.

During his esteemed judicial career, Mr. O’Connor authored numerous judgments across diverse fields such as public, criminal, commercial, securities, and insurance law. He led two high-profile public inquiries—the Walkerton Inquiry (2000–2002) and the Maher Arar Inquiry (2004–2006)—demonstrating his commitment to public service and justice.

Prior to his judicial appointment, Mr. O’Connor was a senior counsel at Borden & Elliot, a predecessor firm of BLG, for 18 years. His practice areas included commercial and public law litigation, further enhancing his reputation as a leading legal expert. Recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada and appointed to the Order of Ontario, he holds an esteemed place in the legal community.

Mr. O’Connor is Chair of Pro Bono Canada and serves on the Board of Directors of the Innocence Canada Foundation. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, marking his influence and respect among peers. A graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School with an LLB (1964), he was called to the Ontario Bar in 1966 and appointed King’s Counsel in 1980. His exceptional contributions have earned him several honorary doctorates and awards.
