François Baril is a bilingual partner in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office, distinguished for his proficiency in litigation with a specialized focus on health law. He serves as counsel to prominent entities such as the Canadian Medical Protective Association, the Medical Council of Canada, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. François is known for his expertise in professional liability, discipline, and regulatory concerns, delivering seasoned advice to both foreign and Canadian clients on all facets of competition law.

His extensive courtroom experience includes appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Tax Court of Canada, all levels of Ontario Courts, as well as the Yukon and the Northwest Territories Courts of Appeal. Furthermore, François has represented clients in various federal and provincial administrative tribunals, coroner’s inquests, and military boards of inquiry.

Beyond his legal practice, François contributes to academia as a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa, where he imparts knowledge in competition law. He is a past president of the AJEFO and his exemplary work in the legal field has earned him recognitions in Chambers Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, and Benchmark Canada. Notably, he was honored with the Best Lawyers® 2022 Medical Negligence “Lawyer of the Year” award in Ottawa.
