Grant Buchanan serves as Counsel in McCarthy Tétrault LLP’s Toronto office, bringing extensive expertise in broadcast and telecom regulation, policy, and business transactions. His distinguished career includes significant work with the Copyright Board of Canada, advising a diverse range of clients from for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, unions, charities, to regulators and financial institutions within the communications industry.

As the former President of the Canadian Broadcasters Rights Agency from 1991 to 2020, Grant provides valuable insights and guidance for parties appearing before the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission), ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada), and the Copyright Board of Canada. His previous roles include Vice President of Corporate & Regulatory Affairs at WIC Western International Communications Inc. and in-house counsel at the Bank of Nova Scotia. Grant’s comprehensive understanding of the communications industry, corporate documentation, and regulatory frameworks in broadcast and telecom regulation is unparalleled.

Grant Buchanan is a prolific author, co-authoring numerous significant publications including the Canadian Broadcasting Regulatory Handbook (2017), the Regulatory Guide to Canadian Television (2014), and The Broadcasting Act-Text and Commentary (2023).
