As a partner and co-head of Goodmans’ Real Estate Group, Ira S. Barkin plays a pivotal role in the execution of large acquisition, financing, development, restructuring, and securitization transactions. He brings extensive expertise in sectors such as seniors housing, commercial leasing, clean energy land development, and telecommunications financing.

With significant transactional experience, Ira has assisted in notable ventures, including advising Harrison Street on various real estate acquisitions in Canada, working with the Province of Ontario on Stelco Inc.’s restructuring, and managing Revera Inc.’s joint venture with Axium Infrastructure. He has also been involved in the US$1.35 billion joint venture of 47 Canadian retirement residences between Revera Inc. and Welltower Inc., as well as Atlantic Power’s US$810 million senior secured credit facilities.

His contributions extend to Brookfield’s acquisition and disposition of Enwave Energy Corporation and Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited’s $771 million acquisition of the Forzani Group. He is recognized as a leading real estate lawyer by Best Lawyers in Canada, The Legal 500 Canada, and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, and has been featured in the Lexpert Special Editions — Energy and Infrastructure.

Ira is also a prolific author and speaker, having published numerous articles and lectured at prominent events such as the Annual Seniors Housing Forum, LSO, and the Ontario Solar Summit and Expo. He contributes to The Canadian REIT Handbook, published by REALpac.
