Jean-Marie Fontaine is the National Leader of BLG’s Shipping Focus Group. He practices in all areas of maritime law, covering a wide range of issues such as cargo, freight, and demurrage claims, collisions, spills, and disputes related to shipbuilding and charterparty contracts. His expertise includes the drafting of contracts of affreightment, logistics and warehousing agreements, charterparties, as well as the purchase, sale, and financing of ships. Jean-Marie is adept at handling applications for coasting trade licenses, the importation and registration of vessels, and provides guidance on marine insurance defense and regulatory matters.

In addition to maritime law, his transportation law practice encompasses aviation and trucking matters, including passenger and cargo claims. He has successfully represented clients before civil and administrative courts, such as the Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Québec Court of Appeal, as well as the Canadian Transportation Agency.

Jean-Marie is a notable member of the Executive of Youth of Shipping and currently serves as the Interim Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Maritime Law Association. He is also the co-author of the chapter on “General Average of Essentials of Canadian Law,” in Maritime Law, 2nd edition. Recognized for his exemplary work, he is listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada (Maritime Law) and Chambers Canada.
