John A. Olthuis is a founding partner of OKT, renowned for his expertise in Aboriginal Law. His practice areas include litigation, comprehensive and specific land rights, self-government, and impacts and benefits agreements. A pivotal figure in Canadian constitutional law, John was instrumental in the landmark negotiations that led to the inclusion of “Section 35” in Canada’s repatriated Constitution in 1982. He has been legal counsel to Chiefs of Ontario and served as table negotiator for the Assembly of First Nations during the Charlottetown Accord Constitutional negotiations.
John has represented clients before numerous government boards and agencies. His exceptional contributions to Aboriginal Law have been recognized by his peers nationwide. He is consistently featured in leading lawyer directories, including The Best Lawyers in Canada and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. He was named Lawyer of the Year for Aboriginal law by The Best Lawyers in Canada in 2010.
Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1965, the Ontario Bar in 1987, and the Newfoundland & Labrador Bar in 2015, John’s distinguished career was further honored when he received the Law Society Medal from the Law Society of Ontario in 2018 and was appointed Member of the Order of Canada in 2023.
