John is a distinguished member of the firm’s Indigenous, Environment and Regulatory, Project Development, and Northern Practice Groups. With an extensive practice that spans across Canada, he offers expert advice on Indigenous, environmental, regulatory, and natural resources matters. His clientele includes oil sands developers, conventional oil & gas companies, railways, mining companies, forestry firms, utilities, and other resource developers. He is proficient in handling environmental regulatory issues and Indigenous law matters, such as Aboriginal consultation and negotiating cooperation protocols and impact benefit agreements for natural resource project development.

In addition, John is adept at advising on regulatory compliance matters, including anti-corruption and bribery laws as well as the Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act (ESTMA) laws. His expertise is recognized by prestigious publications like Best Lawyers in Canada, Chambers Canada, Chambers Global, and Legal 500 Canada for Aboriginal Law. Notably, he was honored as the 2021 ‘Lawyer of the Year’ for Aboriginal Law in Calgary by Best Lawyers in Canada.

John contributes as the editor of the “Aboriginal property taxation” chapter in the BC Continuing Legal Education BC Real Property Assessment Manual. His previous role as a principal negotiator for the Yukon government in land claims negotiations with Yukon First Nations highlights his extensive experience.
