John Doherty is a distinguished partner at Gowling WLG’s Waterloo Region office. As the leader of the firm’s national Expropriation Law Group and a prominent member of the national Municipal Law Group, John’s legal acumen is unparalleled. His practice predominantly focuses on municipal and commercial litigation.

In his commercial litigation role, John showcases his advocacy skills before all levels of Ontario courts, including the Court of Appeal. His municipal litigation expertise frequently brings him before municipal boards, councils, and various administrative tribunals, including the Ontario Land Tribunal. John represents municipalities as well as property owners, tenants, and business owners on planning, zoning, and expropriation matters intertwined with land development and public land acquisitions.

John is an accomplished writer and lecturer on topics related to expropriation and has made significant contributions to the Ontario Expropriation Association, including serving as a past chair and Legislative Reform Committee chair. His leadership extended to his past role as managing partner of his office and his tenure on the firm’s national Executive Committee from 1999 to 2009.
