Marie-Christine Gagnon is a bilingual partner in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. She is a member of the Advocacy group, with a practice focusing on Indigenous law. As a member of the Innu First Nation of Pessamit, Marie-Christine provides expert guidance to clients in negotiations and litigation involving Aboriginal and treaty rights, the duty to consult and accommodate, territorial overlaps, and the valorization of ancestral territory.
Her services extend to advising on the socio-economic development of First Nations and the establishment of business partnerships. Additionally, Marie-Christine collaborates with band councils, businesses, and Indigenous organizations on constitutional or governance-related matters, offering particular expertise with the Indian Act, reserve land system, and drafting of membership codes, custom electoral codes, and by-laws.
Marie-Christine is adept at working with the application of provincial legislation on reserve land, taking security on assets on a reserve, and understanding the rules related to taxation. Her proficiency also covers federal legislation concerning Indigenous people and their lands, along with various land claims agreements across Canada.
