Merle C. Alexander, a member and hereditary Chief of Kitasoo Xai x’ais First Nation, is renowned for his significant contributions to Indigenous reconciliation and the advancement of Indigenous legal professionals. He leads in Indigenous law, with a focus on Indigenous resource law and legal reform initiatives. Merle’s expertise empowers nations through the affirmation of title and rights, sustainable economic development, and environmental conservation.
His practice involves negotiating impact benefit agreements, joint ventures, regulatory engagement, and traditional knowledge collection. Merle supports government-to-government negotiations in key resource sectors, including mining, oil & gas, forestry, pipelines, run-of-river, and hydro projects, tailoring his skills to meet the needs of Indigenous clients.
As part of the co-development team for the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act in British Columbia, Merle is actively involved in the legislative implementation of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in BC and across Canada.
