Peter Giddens is co-leader of McMillan’s intellectual property group and a partner based in Toronto. With an impressive track record as a trusted legal advisor, Peter assists clients with the acquisition, clearance, management, protection, enforcement, licensing, and transfer of intellectual property.

In his extensive brand and content protection practice, Peter counsels clients on the availability of trademarks for use and registration and efficiently prepares and prosecutes trademark and copyright applications. He has substantial experience managing both domestic and international trademark portfolios, helping businesses protect and expand their brands across borders.

Peter represents clients in a range of contentious matters, including trademark and copyright infringement proceedings, trademark opposition and expungement proceedings, and domain name disputes. He is skilled in drafting and negotiating complex IP agreements, addressing ownership of IP rights, the protection of confidential information and trade secrets, and the licensing of intellectual property.

Regularly advising on IP aspects of business transactions and commercial disputes, Peter contributes strategic insight, ensuring his clients’ interests are fully protected in all scenarios. His distinguished standing is further reflected in his service on the CIPO-TIDB Director General’s advisory committee and his longstanding involvement with INTA’s trademark offices practices committee. Peter also demonstrated his sector expertise as an expert witness before the House of Commons standing committee on industry, science and technology regarding amendments to the Trademarks Act and Copyright Act.
