Shawn Munro is the co-lead of Bennett Jones LLP’s National Energy Industry Team and the former co-lead of both the Environmental Law and Indigenous Law Practice Groups. With over 25 years of experience, Shawn advises and represents clients on the regulatory and environmental aspects of oil and gas, as well as electricity development projects throughout Canada.

He is highly experienced in navigating regulatory proceedings for wells, pipelines, batteries, upgraders, plants, power transmission lines, hydroelectric generation, and waste facilities. Shawn has successfully undertaken hearings and secured approvals for numerous major projects, including in-situ bitumen developments, sour gas, coalbed methane projects, pipelines, and transmission lines.

Shawn is adept at handling environmental assessments before both federal and provincial authorities, such as the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Alberta Environment and Parks, and the BC Environmental Assessment Office. He has substantial expertise in reaching negotiated settlements with land interest holders, securing rights of entry, and representing clients in surface rights compensation hearings across various provinces.

He also provides insightful legal counsel on First Nations and Métis matters, guiding clients through issues related to resource development on traditional lands, reserves, and settlements. His thorough understanding of regulatory frameworks, environmental law, and Indigenous law positions him as a leading legal expert for complex projects involving multiple jurisdictions and stakeholder groups.
